Us homeopaths believe that the greatest difference between homeopathy and allopathy is just that, the former works with the body, the latter "against" it. But of course we all know that it is far more than that. There is also the fact that to get the best out of your treatment you need to work with the homeopath, you are taking responsibility for your own health and enabling yourself. This is the complete opposite of visiting a GP and walking out after a few minutes with a prescription having expected your doctor to take on the responsibility for treating you. One of the things I usually tell new patients is that I am helping their body heal itself, that is how homeopathy works. As homeopaths our biggest fear is suppression which can happen very often in allopathic medicine. But we are also taught to seek the highest cure, a total elimination of symptoms and a complete restoration to health in a gentle, permanent way. There are many ways to achieve this but none of them are possible without the patient's cooperation . The ways to a total cure are multi faceted and unique to each patient. The total cure cannot always be achieved and we all know that at the end of the day everybody is different, some patients have incredibly strong constitutions and some are not so lucky. And the homeopath must always be the unprejudiced observer, respecting the patient's wishes. I know that some patients just want and need to feel better after years of getting nowhere, in these cases palliation and the relief of symptoms come before our high ideals of cure. As long as we are not suppressing, and homeopathic suppression is rare and the patient feels better we have helped.
